2017 ARN Try of the Year

As ever there was no shortage of memorable tries scored by Americas players in 2017. After scouring hours of game tape and subjecting our brains to replay after replay, we’ve come up with a short list of our favorites from international rugby over the past 12 months.

The Americas Rugby Championship had some classic tries. Cam Dolan finished off a creative team try for the Eagles against Chile. In San Diego he would go over for an even better try, this time against Canada in the mid-year Rugby World Cup qualifiers. Later in the match Nate Augspurger finished off a gem of a try.

Also impressing against Chile was Taylor Paris. The Canadian flier received a pass inside his own half, kicked ahead and got a fortunate bounce to score a great solo try. For many Canada’s loss to Brazil is remembered for the wrong reasons. While the North Americans had a poor match the Tupis did not. The game winner came from Moisés Duque who crossed for the best Brazilian try of the year.

Ramiro Moyano was the star for Los Pumas against Georgia in Jujuy with a hat-trick. His 56th minute score saw him beating six would-be defenders to score from the halfway line. In the Rugby Championship the best Pumas try came in the opening round via Martín Landajo. Argentina counter-attacked from inside their own 22 and the scrumhalf chased and gathered the kick ahead to score untouched.

Honorable mention goes to Uruguay’s Santiago Arata against Spain in the Nations Cup, our pick for best individual effort of the year. The lightning-quick scrumhalf gathered a restart, beat four defenders with his footwork and kicked over two more to score a sensational try.

THE WINNER

Our pick for the best try of the year was an obvious one given that it also won World Rugby’s Try of the Year. A superb team try ended with Joaquín Tuculet latching on to a pass from Emiliano Boffelli to finish a 90 meter score. Tuculet receives the 2017 ARN Try of the Year award on behalf of his Pumas teammates.
