The Houston SaberCats have a new prop in their ranks. Former Connacht and Ireland u19 representative Jamie Dever has joined up with the Major League Rugby franchise, suiting up in the No 1 jersey for their friendly against the Dallas Reds on the weekend. The 24-year-old bolsters a front row division that has already suffered a blow with versatile All-American Codi Jones set for a long spell on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.
Dever arrives from Cambridge Rugby Club who he joined in September after departing Irish province Connacht. He had been with the Guinness Pro Championship side’s academy since 2012 but saw his progress severely hampered by a series of injuries that kept him on the sidelines for the best part of three years. A powerful carrier and scrummager, he will be primarily a loosehead prop though he has also played tighthead in the past.
The new arrival gives the SaberCats two Ireland age grade players in the front row with along with Adam Macklin. With England u18 lock Charlie Hewitt also on the books, Houston’s forward pack will be a formidable unit. Former Eagles Kyle Sumsion and Matt Trouville will be prominent figures in the back row, with Sumsion set to captain the side after leading the team against the Reds on Saturday.
