The Utah Warriors have added another player to their Major League Rugby roster in a busy week. Josh Whippy is the latest name to put pen to paper, joining BYU teammates Jackson Kaka and Matt Jensen along with Louisville standout Pio Vatuvei. It’s another move that will be seen as a formality, with twin brother Jared set to join up in the coming days.
Whippy enjoyed a breakout season in 2017. Like Kaka he was previously a second team Collegiate All-American but only achieved honorable mention in 2017. That didn’t prevent him from being named to the USA Select XV for the Americas Pacific Challenge in October and he proved one of the outstanding players in the tournament. The Fiji-born flyer impressed with his attacking flair and was duly selected to travel with the senior Eagles on their tour in November but was forced to withdraw due to personal reasons.
Comfortable anywhere in the outside backs, he is expected to be part of the upcoming Americas Rugby Championship squad. He gives the Warriors a pair of x-factor players in the backline along with Paul Lasike, to date the only other back officially signed. Among others expected are USA Sevens halfback Don Pati and former Utes winger Vernon Ale.
