Rodrigo Capó Ortega is set to continue his professional career for at least one more season. Castres Olympique manager Christophe Urios is determined to retain his club captain with multiple French sources expecting Capó Ortega, who celebrated his 37th birthday last week, to extend his deal in the coming days. His current contract expires in June 2018.
One of Uruguay’s most accomplished players, Capó Ortega is an anomaly in the professional era having spent virtually the entirety of his career with one club. A brief three-month stay with Millau pre-empted his signature with Castres, who he joined in 2002. He has now in his 16th season with the club, all of them in France’s top division, and boasts more than 350 appearances across all competitions.
Capó Ortega’s dedication to his club has seen him miss out on numerous test matches for Uruguay. Despite making his debut in November of 2000 he has won only 39 caps. He also missed out on the 2015 World Cup but now looks ready to return to Los Teros in time to help them in their World Cup Qualifying series against Canada in January.
Should Uruguay earn qualification for RWC 2019 there now seems a chance that Capó Ortega could take part in the competition with a new contract set to carry him through to June 2019. Nearing his 39th birthday he would not be the oldest player to represent Los Teros at the World Cup – Diego Ormaechea was 40 years old when he led Uruguay to their first ever World Cup appearance in 1999.
