Bjarke Ingels Group reveals Stadium plans for Austin

Architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has revealed plans for an impressive new sports and entertainment complex in Austin, Texas. According to BIG, the ‘East Austin District’ will incorporate 1.3 million square feet of green space, retail stores, and entertainment venues under an enormous solar array with the intention of being completely self-sufficient in generating electricity.

The centerpiece of the design is a 40,000 open-air stadium designed for soccer and rugby that will share facilities and sit adjacent to a 15,000 seat arena for rodeo, basketball, hockey, or music concerts. Other features include eight open courtyards of green space, youth facilities, a premium theater, indoor and outdoor market space, and a hotel.

While it seems unlikely that Austin Elite of Major League Rugby would use such a facility, especially given current rugby-specific developments at the Austin Huns complex at Nixon Lane, the venue could be future host of international test matches. It would certainly be a welcome addition to any potential World Cup or major rugby event bid.

No specific intended location for the proposal has been given, nor are there any indications that the project has moved beyond the concept stage.

More images and project specifications can be seen at the BIG website.
