Americas trio reach Cape Town Quarter Finals

Day One’s results at the Cape Town Sevens could not have been more opposite to that of Dubai for the Americas. Where last weekend all three teams were floundering, this week they have all qualified for the Cup Quarter Finals after some impressive performances.

Topping Pool B was the USA, who completed a remarkable turnaround after going winless in Dubai. The Eagles won all three of their matches including a stunning 22-0 result over New Zealand in their first match of the day. Carlin Isles set the pace with five tries in the first two games including a hat trick against Australia before being rested in the final match with Spain.

Canada also finished on top of their pool, upsetting Fiji to take top honors in Pool D. They had earlier been on the wrong end of a 19-17 loss to Samoa, but made up for it with a dominant win over Wales to wrap up their Day One in fine form.

Argentina weren’t far behind, navigating a tricky Scotland side and thrashing Uganda. England proved too much but the Pumas will at least be pleased to make the Cup draw after failing to do so in Dubai.

The Americas are guaranteed at least one team in the Cup Semi Finals as Argentina will face the USA in the final Cup Quarter Final on Day Two. Canada have a good shot at joining the winner as they will be matched up against France in their Quarter Final.

All games will be streamed live by World Rugby. Canadian viewers can watch on CBC Sports. Those in the USA can watch on ESPN.
