Costa Rica, Guatemala Stand Out on Day One in Managua

Costa Rica and Guatemala were the stand-out performers on Day One in Managua. They join El Salvador and Honduras in competing for Gold at the 2017 Central American Games (Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos).

This year’s edition is the 11th of history of the Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos. It is, however, the first to feature Rugby 7’s. Both Men’s and Women’s Rugby 7’s feature.Five countries are competing in both the Men’s and Women’s categories. They are Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Performances on day one saw Guatemala and Costa Rica going undefeated. This is true both in the Men’s and Women’s categories. Guatemala’s men recorded 56-5 wins over Honduras and El Salvador respectively. The Women’s side hammered Honduras 64-0 and deleted El Salvador 34-0.

The Costa Rican men opened with a 22-7 win over the home nation. In their remaining day one fixture they toppled El Salvador 34-5. The Women’s team also faced Nicaragua first-up. They came away with a 34-0 victory. In their other match they defeated El Salvador 24-5.

Nicaragua finished day one as the third best team in both the Men’s and Women’s divisions. This is based on both completing wins over Honduras.

The competition will resume on Monday. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals are to be crowned.
