Patricio Fernández Suffers Freak Knee Injury

Clermont’s Argentine fly half may have played for the final time this season. Patricio Fernández suffered a freak knee injury today playing against Lyon.

Having started at fly half Fernández went down inured in the 22nd minute. Visibly in pain on the floor, the Rosario pivot suffered a fractured knee cap and potential ligament damage.

Capped two times by Argentina many believe Fernández is Argentina’s best fly half. He is unavailable for Los Pumas due to Argentina’s policy of not selecting players who play their rugby in Europe. Argentina’s present tour of Europe has Nicolás Sánchez, Juan Martín Hernández, and Santiago González Iglesias as the options at 10.

For Clermont it is nothing short of a tragedy. The club has already lost all of Camille Lopez, Greig Laidlaw, and Charlie Cassang to injury. Laidlaw is the only one likely to return to fitness in time for the Champions Cup in January.
