The 2017 Campeonato Argentino is underway. Argentina’s national provincial championship started on Saturday with matches being played in the first, second and third divisions.
CAMPEONATO ARGENTINO
Playing at home the 2016 champions, Buenos Aires were pushed to the limit. Northern powerhouses, Tucumán helped make it a game to remember as it went down to the wire. Buenos Aires came out 24-23 winners.
In western Argentina Cuyo opened their campaign at home. Visitors, Córdoba put in a strong showing to complete a 16-22 victory.
In the north Salta province were at home against Rosario. The visitors from Argentina’s third largest city pulled-off a victory on the road. Their 28-32 wins has them well placed to push forward as contenders this year.
SECOND DIVISION
In Corrientes Noreste were up against Uruguay’s official ‘A’ side, the Uruguay XV. The home side played the better rugby to complete a convincing 43-22 win against the leading Uruguayan players who are not involved in the upcoming two-match tour of Namibia.
Entrerriana had home advantage against Mar del Plata. They were unable to make it count as the visitors from the Buenos Aires provincial beach resort city completed a 20-31 victory.
In Santa Fé the home side, Santafesina, were comfortable winners over Sur. The 49-12 result sends out a warning to all opposition sides in the second division. It has Santafesina well positioned to push for promotion to the top level of the Campeonato Argentino.
THIRD DIVISION
In the third division Alto Valle set down a benchmark for everyone to take notice of. Playing at home in Patagonia Alto Valle romped to a 63-12 win over Austral.
Santiagueña also impressed on Saturday, scoring 47 points. Notwithstanding they were challenged far more by their opponents, Chubut. In a high-scoring encounter Santiagueña finished as winners by a scoreline of 47-35.
Round 1 of the Campeonato Argentino came to a close earlier today. The one and only Sunday fixture saw Sanjuanina playing host to Oeste. The visitors had the better of play and return home with a 23-17 victory.
