Eagles look for new stars at Silicon Valley 7s

A number of fringe players and two newcomers will get opportunities to impress at the Silicon Valley 7s as Mike Friday has named a mixed squad for the pre-season tourney. NYAC playmaker Chris Mattina and Columbus forward Joe Schroeder are the new names who will pull on an Eagles jersey for the first time at Avaya Stadium on Saturday.

Ben Pinkelman has been named captain with regular HSBC Sevens Series skipper Madison Hughes listed as the 13th man. Other series regulars in the side include Martin Iosefo, Matai Leuta, Folua Niua, Stephen Tomasin, and Maka Unufe.

Less prominent squad members who are given an early shot to make their mark are forwards Malon Al-Jiboori and Anthony Welmers, and outside backs Ryan Matyas and Kevon Williams. The two-day tournament begins on Saturday. The USA are drawn in Pool C along with Tonga, New Zealand, and Chile.
