Canada opt for youth at Silicon Valley 7s

Damian McGrath has opted to rest the majority of his HSBC Sevens Series starters for the Silicon Valley 7s taking place at San Jose’s Avaya Stadium this weekend. The young squad will be captained by John Moonlight and have no lack of size with eight players regularly used in the forwards.

Admir Cejvanovic returns to the sevens game after more than a year away concentrating on XVs and there is one new name in World Rugby u20 Trophy standout Jake Thiel. The agile No 8 makes his senior debut having previously represented the Maple Leafs development side.

Teenage flyer Josiah Morra is included as are Phil Berna and Liam Underwood, the pair struggling with injuries for much of last season. Matt Mullins is set to continue his experiment as a winger with Pat Kay tasked with the vital playmaking role.

Canada have been drawn in Pool A at the two-day tournament and will face England, Ireland, and Samoa on Saturday.
