Sánchez Turns Down Clermont

Nicolás Sánchez has turned down an offer from Clermont. The Pumas fly half was sought by the French giants but Sánchez is staying with Los Jaguares.

The 2017 Top 14 champions are presently seeking a fly half. The club lost regular starter Camille Lopez this past weekend. His broken fibia will require at least a 5 months recovery. In all likelihood he is out for all of the European Champions Cup season and a return for the final rounds of the Top 14 is the best Clermont can hope for.

The club has just two fly halves on their books. The other is Argentina’s Patricio Fernández. The Rosario play maker has been a regular both this season and last, playing as understudy to Lopez. He has tended to start for understrength Clermont line-ups.

Clermont is also without new-arrival Greig Laidlaw. The Scotland captain plays scrum-half but is regarded as a more than capable replacement. He is out for the remainder of the year. Seeking a quick solution, the club was interested in Sánchez but he is to instead remain in Buenos Aires to again play Super Rugby in 2018.

Sánchez already has experience playing in France. Prior clubs include both Bordeaux and Toulon between 2011 and 2015.
