Emiliano Boffelli has been nominated by World Rugby for Breakthrough Player of the year. The Argentine winger is one of three nominees for the prestigious award. The others are New Zealand’s Rieko Ioane and France’s Damian Penaud. The winner will be announced by World Rugby on November 11.
Boffelli was a success for Argentina in his debut year. The 22-year-old made his debut against England in June. He started in both San Juan and Santa Fé, scoring a try in each match. He would also score in his third cap which was against South Africa in Port Elizabeth. His long-range goal-kicking saw Boffelli’s name underlined as a potential star in Japan 2019.
In total Boffelli has played 8 test matches thus far. All saw him playing in the starting line-up. His one cap away from the wing was against Australia in Canberra. In the absence of Joaquin Tuculet, Boffelli played at fullback.
Boffelli’s rise to the top has not been unexpected. Having come through the junior and PladAR system the Rosario back was a regular for Argentina at U18, U19 and U20 levels.
