Seattle Seawolves sign Shalom Suniula

Another World Cup veteran is headed to Major League Rugby. Seattle Saracens star Shalom Suniula will play for the Seawolves in the 2018 season, the first for the newest professional competition in the USA. The 29-year-old joins just after the confirmation of Eric Duechle’s signature on Tuesday.

One of three Suniula brothers to have played international rugby for the USA, Shalom played the last of his 42 tournaments on the HSBC Sevens Series at Wellington in 2014 before switching his focus to the XV-a-side game. He made his test debut against Uruguay just two weeks later and has won 18 caps for the Eagles since, most recently against Russia in June 2016. He was selected by then-coach Mike Tolkin for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England.

A gifted and versatile backfielder, Suniula can play anywhere from scrumhalf to fullback but has seen his greatest success as a halfback at international level. He looks set to form a dangerous playmaking combo with former Canadian international sevens rival Phil Mack at the Seawolves, who will have no shortage of attacking flair with former England Sevens star Mat Turner also on their books.
