Colombia Romp Past Peru

Colombia romped past Peru today, winning 50-3 in Lima. The impressive win from Los Tucanes underlines why Colombia will be playing in the new Sudamérica 6 Naciones A in 2018.

Although Peru had home advantage Colombia was in command throughout the match. Early pressure from Los Tucanes saw Los Tumis offside at a ruck. José Manuel Diosa took the opportunity to open the scoring with a penalty from in front of the posts.

Several minutes later and hopes of Peru being competitive quickly faded. Los Tucanes went over for the game’s opening try. Diosa scored and landed the conversion to put Colombia 10-0 up.

The next phase of play saw Peru winning the battle. With No 8 and captain, Sebastián Mejía offside Los Tumis got themselves on the board through fullback Francisco Deustua. Mejía made amends shortly thereafter to score. His try made it 17-3.

Next to cross was fullback Andrés Álvarez. Following an impressive backline move he ran dotted down as Peru were left to ponder over what had just happened. The minutes later Colombia scored the final points of the opening half. The 37th minute try from second-rower Danny Giraldo made it 29-3 at half time.

Diosa was in the thick of the action in the opening half. The goal-kicking center went over for the opening points of the second half. He then converted his own try.

Two further tries would be scored by the Colombians. The final one went to right winger Brayan Campiño. With Diosa’s conversion on target it saw Colombia reaching 50 points.

Game two of the South American B Championship will be played next Saturday. Like today’s match it will also take place at the Fundo La Querencia de Lurin in Lima. The visitors are to be Venezuela who will then face Colombia in Medellín on Saturday October 21.
