Seawolves sign England Sevens star Mat Turner

The Seattle Seawolves on Monday announced the signing of former England Sevens star Mat Turner for the 2018 Major League Rugby season. Born in Cape Town, he was a trialist for South Africa’s u20 team before opting to represent the country of his mother. The 29-year-old wing or fullback will also play a major role off the field having accepted a position as Operations Director.

A playmaker with exceptional speed off the mark, Turner was first selected for England Sevens in 2009 after playing for Bristol in the 2008-09 English Premiership season. Turner debuted in Dubai and would go on to play in 38 HSBC Sevens Series tournaments, his last coming at Twickenham in 2014. He was also selected for England’s entry in the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens held in Moscow.

During his sevens career he scored 92 tries and 492 points on the HSBC circuit, good enough for 7th all-time in both categories for England. He was nominated for IRB (World Rugby) Sevens Player of the Year following the 2011-12 HSBC Sevens Series.

Major League Rugby will kick off its first regular season in April 2018.
