DTH van der Merwe scored on his Newcastle Falcons debut. The Canadian flier played his first match in the Aviva Premiership on Saturday. The Falcons caused an upset, winning 33-32 away to Bath.
van der Merwe’s try came in the opening half. He touched down in the right corner after chasing a kick through from fly half Craig Willis.
The Canadian was joined in the starting lineup by the Socino brothers. Juan Pablo Socino played inside center while Santiago Socino was hooker. For Santiago Socino it was a special match. It marked the completion of his remarkable elevation from the lower divisions up into a starting place in the Aviva Premiership.
Early on in the match Santiago Socino demonstrated why the Falcons have invested in him. A 9th minute break from the uncapped Argentine saw Newcastle scoring their first try. With the well-known Facundo Isa also impressing this weekend Argentina have food for thought over their selection policies.
Juan Pablo Socino also came close to scoring a try in the match. Unlike, Santiago Socino, Juan Pablo has played for Argentina. Juan Pablo was a part of Argentina’s roster in Rugby World Cup 2015. He started at inside center in the win over Namibia in Leicester.
Newcastle’s win over Bath this weekend sees the Northern England side takes the club to 4th position. Bath are tied with both the Wasps and Harlequins for 5th place.
