Old Christians Club have been crowned Uruguayan Club Champions. The Montevideo club won the 2017 Uruguayo de Clubes Final, downing Old Boys 23-11 this afternoon. In winning the title, Old Christians Club made it three national titles in as many years.
In front of a healthy crowd at the Parque Rivera, the teams both got on the scoreboard early. Andrés De León and Juan Manuel Cat exchanged penalties to make it a 3-3 scoreline.
In the 31st minute discipline cost Old Boys. With Francisco López yellow carded De Léon gave Old Christians Club a 6-3 lead. The club would add again to the scoring before halftime, this time scoring the game’s first try. Los Teros flier Federico Favaro ran over to ensure a ten point lead for Old Christians at the interval.
Old Boys opened the second half scoring with a penalty. Cat was again the scorer, his strike making it a 13-6 game. De León, though, canceled it out shortly thereafter.
With the game into its final stages Old Christians maintained focus. Jorge Zerbino went over for a well taken try. It was converted by De León. With it the match sealed with Old Christians leading 23-6..
Old Boys did manage to fight back. It was too late though. A late converted try from Cat meant that the difference between the sides was 12 points and with it Old Christians were crowned Uruguayan Club Champions for 2017.
