Cubelli Makes First Appearance of 2017

Puma Tomás Cubelli is fit-again. The scrum-half made his first appearance of 2017 this morning, playing for the Brumbies against the Reds in Super Rugby. He did so as a replacement from the bench. The Brumbies were beaten at the death, losing 16-15 to the Queenslanders.

Cubelli has been out of action since injuring his knee in a pre-season fixture. It saw him miss Argentina’s June Internationals against England and Georgia. Martín Landajo started all three, doing so with Gonzalo Bertranou acting as his replacement.

Landajo and Cubelli have been permanent members of Los Pumas in the Daniel Hourcade era. In fact Bertranou’s appearance against England marked the first time that a scrum-half other than Landajo or Cubelli had played a test match since he took over.

For the upcoming Rugby Championship Cubelli is the only player based outside of Argentina being considered. Selection policy prohibits any player based abroad from international duty. The only exception is when a player has permission. This is the case of Cubelli. It is not true of any Argentine player based in Europe.

Cubelli is currently considering his future in Australia. Among his options are a return to Buenos Aires. This would mean him joining Los Jaguares for the 2018 Super Rugby campaign.
