Is Argentina going to face the British & Irish Lions in 2021 and 2025? According to the Telegraph there is a strong chance. The British & Irish Lions’ authorities are presently finalizing plans for their 2021 and 2025 tours to South Africa and Australia.
Of the two tours Los Pumas could potentially feature for one match in either. The Telegraph notes that final details will be released following discussions with SANZAAR this coming November.
Lions management are said to be interested in having a test match against Argentina and for that match to be in Argentina. Such a fixture would be part of the tour to South Africa with the British and Irish side potentially playing in Buenos Aires prior to playing three tests in South Africa.
The 2025 tour is to be to Australia. There is also a desire to have a match against Argentina included on that tour. The British & Irish Lions would play against Australia and the country’s Super Rugby franchises. With the reduction from five to four Australian Super Rugby franchises there is a potential spot to add an additional match.
In the event that Argentina would face the Lions in 2025 that match would be in Australia.
Lions management told the Telegraph: “it is not possible to organize a compete tour of Argentina but we would like to involve them and they are available to play against us.”
Argentina has previously faced the British & Irish Lions on seven occasions. The most recent was the famous 25-25 draw between the sides in Cardiff, Wales in 2005. Prior to that Argentina hosted tours in 1910, 1927 and 1936.
