Trainor ruptures Achilles, out of World Cup Qualifiers

It’s more bad news for Canadian fans as Conor Trainor is out of the upcoming World Cup Qualifying series against the USA after sustaining a ruptured Achilles tendon in the match against Romania on Saturday. The attacking midfielder was expected to play a significant role for the team but will now be sidelined for several months with the injury, joining fellow Achilles victim Jeff Hassler and knee casualty Matt Evans on the disabled list.

Patrick Johnston of The Province broke the disappointing news on Tuesday evening in what is the latest setback to the Canadian camp after disheartening losses to Georgia and Romania kicked off their June test series. Ciaran Hearn moved into the position during the Romanian match after Trainor waas carried off and it’s most likely that Hearn will fill the outside center role though there are a number of options with Connor Braid, Nick Blevins, and Guiseppe du Toit also in camp.

The injury is doubly painful for Trainor having signed a contract with new club Nevers for the 2017-18 season on the back of an impressive year with Vannes. He is now certain to miss the first half of the Pro D2 season and is unlikely to return until well into 2018, also ruling him out of contention for both the November internationals and the Americas Rugby Championship for Canada.
