Santiago Mare joins Argentina XV for Nations Cup

Santiago Mare has been called up by Felipe Contepomi to join the Argentina XV for the World Rugby Nations Cup. The 20-year-old midfielder takes the place of injured Tomás Granella in the 28-man squad. Mare returns to the squad having made his Argentina XV debut as a replacement against Chile in the Sudamérica Rugby Cup match this past weekend. He was a starter for the Pumitas in last year’s World Rugby u20 Championship, a tournament that saw Argentina finish in 3rd place overall.

Granella’s injury means that another Pumitas graduate, Martín Elías, will be the only flyhalf cover in the squad for first choice Joaquín Díaz Bonilla. Granella had been earmarked for the inside centre position but is also a capable performer in the No 10 shirt similar to Pumas utility Santiago González Iglesias. Elías had been considered fullback cover but the starting role looks likely to be filled by Fernando Luna with Segundo Tuculet able to cover a variety of positions in the backline.
