Paraguay and Colombia win to Begin South American B Junior Championship

Paraguay and Colombia won their respective opening matches of the South American ‘B’ Championship. Played in La Guajira, Colombia they defeated Peru and Venezuela by scorelines of 67–0 and 30–0.

In the tournament’s opening match Paraguay took-on Peru. Los Yakarés juniors held a commanding 45-0 lead at the midway point. The star performer was scrum half Facundo Berdejo who scored three tries.

The Paraguayans continued to dominate in the second half though points would not flow so easily. The final score of 67-0 nonetheless hammered home the difference between the sides.

The second match of the day saw neighbors Colombia and Venezuela in action. In what was a far closer contest, the home side won by 30 points.

Before the game had reached the 10 minute point Colombia was already 10-0 ahead. Unconverted tries by Juan David Herrera and Juan Moreno sent a warning to the Venezuelan players to tighten-up their defense.

But with Venezuela’s attack unable to break ground the visitors were unable to trouble the scorers. When Santiago Aponte went over for Venezuela’s next try the result was sealed. Additional scores made it a 30-0 game.

All four teams will return to the field on Wednesday May 31. Paraguay will take-on Venezuela while Colombia are to face Peru.
