Canada impress on Day One in Langford

Canada got off to the best possible start on Day One of the HSBC Women’s Sevens Series event in Langford on Saturday. The hosts emerged as early favorites heading into Day Two after blowing past Brazil, France, and Russia in quick succession by a combined score of 90-20. Only New Zealand were able to match their perfect record but did so far less convincingly after being run close by un-ranked Netherlands and scraping past the USA by just one score.

The Women’s Eagles also had a positive start to their tournament, defeating England by a conversion in their opening match before their scrappy encounter with New Zealand. Unlike their Pacific rivals the Netherlands did not prove a challenge with Jessica Javelet and Naya Tapper contributing a pair of tries each in the 57-0 blowout. Australia now await in the Cup Quarter Finals and while the Olympic champions looked good in their first two matches against Spain and Ireland, a draw with Fiji proved they were vulnerable heading into the knock-out rounds.

Brazil struggled on their opening day, losing handily in each of their matches while scoring only three tries themselves. Canada, Russia, and France all proved superior and a very tricky match against Fiji now awaits in the Trophy Semi Finals.

England will be the next to try and halt Canada’s momentum in the first Cup Quarter Final of Day Two, followed by the USA and Australia. France will be confident of victory over Ireland in their Quarter Final match, and New Zealand will aim to carry on their impressive showing against England into their Quarter Final against Russia.

Sunday’s matches will be streamed live by World Rugby.
