Oyonnax are back in the Top 14. The Haut-Bugey club officially finished at the peak of the Pro D2, doing so with a round to spear. Oyonnax defeated Perpignan 19-9 on Thursday but it was Agen’s loss this evening that saw the club over the finish line.
Agen’s 20-18 defeat to Albi sees the club on 85 points, five fewer than Oyonnax. Agen must now win the Pro D2 Grand Final in Bordeaux if it is to earn promotion. As it stands Agen, Mont de Marsan, Biarritz and Montauban are to be the Semi Finalists.
Oyonnax’s promotion is welcome news to both Canada and Uruguay. The club is home to both experience and youth. Veteran Canadian Jamie Cudmore joined Oyonnax from Clermont while Manuel Leindekar is involved with the Espoirs.
The 2017-2018 Top 14 season will see Oyonnax and one of the earlier mentioned clubs replacing Bayonne and Grenoble. The additional twelve sides in the Top 14 are to be Bordeaux, Brive, Castres, Clermont, La Rochelle, Lyon, Montpellier, Pau, Racing 92, Stade Français, Toulon and Toulouse.
