Clermont toppled Leinster in today’s European Semi Final. The results sets up a French vs English final in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh next month. In doing so it is heartache for the Irish as Munster were also eliminated this weekend, losing to Saracens in Dublin on Saturday.
Today’s Semi Final in Lyon saw another full house. 15,000 Leinster supporters joined the French in attendance to give the match a total of 40,024 fans. The venue is the same in which Argentina defeated Georgia in Rugby World Cup 2007. 40,240 was the official attendance on that occasion.
In reaching the final Clermont are looking to overturn their horrific record of capitulating in finals. Clermont finished runners-up in the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2005 Top 14. In the Champions Cup the Central French side was runner-up in both 2013 and 2015.
Clermont’s opposition at Murrayfield is going to be Saracens. The London-based side won the 2016 final, defeating Racing 92 in Lyon. Americas players Marcelo Bosch, Juan Figallo, Titi Lamositele and Chris Wyles will be looking for additional trophies for Saracens. Puma Patricio Fernández will be chasing his first for Clermont. Fernández was a second half replacement today.
