Americas trio into Hong Kong Quarter Finals

All three Americas entries into the main bracket of the Hong Kong 7s have reached the Cup Quarter Finals. Argentina, Canada, and the USA each emerged with winning records through the pool stages with the USA leading the way by winning all three of their seeding matches.

Canada earned their keep with a confident 28-14 win over France. Two tries from Justin Douglas and 13 points from Nathan Hirayama led the way with captain John Moonlight adding the final score. It was Douglas again who found the line against South Africa but Canada fell short to the series leaders by 26-7. They will continue their tournament against Fiji in the Quarter Finals.

Pool D results saw Argentina push past a resilient Russian side by 17-12 with tries coming from Fernando Luna, Germán Schulz, and Matías Osadczuk. The Eagles meanwhile faced a similar challenge in Scotland but held out to win 19-14 thanks to a hat-trick for superstar Perry Baker.

The final match of the pool saw the two Americas combatants go head-to-head. What should have been a close encounter was instead a crushing win for the USA as they wiped the Argentines away scoring six tries to one. Baker added one more with Folau Niua and Matai Leuta each bagging a single and two for Mike Te’o. José Barros Sosa notched the only score for a very disappointed Pumas team.

Argentina now face Australia in their Quarter Final fixture while the USA have drawn ever-dangerous England. The last Quarter Final pits South Africa against New Zealand to cap what looks to be a very intriguing set of knock-out matches.

All games will be streamed live by World Rugby.
