Japan left no doubt as to who the top team was at the Women’s Qualifiers bracket of the Hong Kong 7s as they cruised to victory over South Africa to claim a core spot on the 2017-18 HSBC Women’s Sevens Series. Earlier wins over China and Italy led the way to the final, where they had a slow start but recovered in style. Two quick tries by South Africa saw them lead 10-7 at the break but it was all Japan in the second stanza, with three tries to none securing the return to core status after a year in exile.
No Americas teams made it to Day Two of the qualifiers with Argentina, Colombia, and Jamaica all bowing out after a difficult Day One that saw them win only one of nine games. The Americas weren’t completely shut out, however, with Canadian referee Rose LaBrèche taking charge of the final and earning plaudits from both commentators and observers for her calm and accurate performance.
