This season just hasn’t gone to plan for the majority of the Americas players in the Guinness Pro 12. Injuries and a lack of opportunities have restricted their impact to supporting roles at best, with only a couple commanding regular rotation in starting lineups.
Blaine Scully is one of those who has managed to make a difference. The US Eagles winger has been a mainstay on the wing for Cardiff Blues and one of their most consistent players. He wears No 11 on Friday evening at Ulster’s home ground of Ravenhill.
Another to stay relevant is Scarlets winger DTH van der Merwe, who starts on the right wing against Benetton Treviso. Canadian-born Italy international Robert Barbieri might have made a greater impact had injury not wiped out the first half of his season. He starts for Benetton at the back of the scrum with Argentine import Alberto Porolli covering prop from the bench.
Two more Argentines suit up for Zebre when they host the Dragons at Stadio Lanfranchi. Front row Bruno Postiglioni and flyhalf Serfan Bordoli are among the replacements. Canadian captain Tyler Ardron is again among the extras for Ospreys with Leinster set to arrive at Liberty Stadium.
