Records set to fall in Hong Kong

Nathan Hirayama will surpass former teammate Phil Mack as Canada’s all-time leading scorer with his first points in Hong Kong this weekend. The legendary halfback pairing are currently deadlocked at 973 points, with Hirayama looking a certainty to become Canada’s first 1000 point scorer on the HSBC Sevens Series, a mark he could eclipse this weekend. Hirayama will also play in his 50th tournament, becoming the third Canadian to hit the half-century following Mack and captain John Moonlight.

Also in the race to hit 1000 points in Hong Kong is South African star Branco du Preez, who sits just ahead of Hirayama at 982 points. Tim Mikkelson returns to the New Zealand lineup and isn’t far behind with 959, though it will take a special effort to reach the mark not being a regular goal kicker. Only 16 players have achieved 1000 on the circuit previously.

The all-time overall try-scoring record is set to fall yet again, and could do so multiple times over the weekend as both current co-leaders are in action. England’s Dan Norton and Kenyan star Collins Injera are level on 244. Mikkelson is good enough for 189 and just one more will push him past Seabelo Senatla into sole possession of 5th all-time.

Other notable achievements likely to be reached in Hong Kong include a 100th Series try for Tom Mitchell, which can be reached with just one touchdown. Canada’s John Moonlight is just behind on 96 tries. Alatasi Tupou’s recall to the Samoan team gives him a very good chance of scoring his 500th career point, just six away, while Katsuyuki Sakai looks set to become the first Japanese player to reach the same mark with 492 points on his ledger. Former Australian skipper Ed Jenkins will also play his 50th tournament.

The flagship tournament of the HBSC Sevens Series kicks off at 6pm local time, 6am Eastern on Friday, April 7. A complete list of fixtures can be seen here. All matches will be streamed live by World Rugby.
