Canadian second row Cameron Pierce has announced on Social Media that he is taking an extended break from the game due to the continuing effects of concussion. The 25-year-old, who has won three test caps, sustained a serious blow to the head early in the season and then suffered a recurrence of symptoms following attempts to return with Pau’s reserve side. With his contract at the Top 14 club expiring at the end of the season he has called an early end to his campaign and though he has stopped short of ‘retirement’, he will not immediately seek a new contract despite interest from Pro D2 sides.
“It is with sadness that I announce the end of my season with Section Paloise because of too many concussions, the last one October 1st, 2016. Motivated to sign with another club for next season, I returned to the pitch too early and the symptoms have only gotten worse. For now I am not looking for a future club, first I wish to preserve and regain my health back to 100%. To the players, we need to avoid the stigma around such an injury, we must realize and respect that it takes time and that each case is different. Big thanks to those who have not passed judgement. Thanks to the supporters and my teammates for their support these four years in Pau.”
Originally from Vernon, BC, Pierce came to prominence with the Canada u20 side via the Kelowna Crows rugby club. The 2m (6’7″) tall lineout forward caught the eye of French scouts after scoring two tries at the World Junior Trophy tournament in Georgia, which saw him awarded a two-year academy deal with Clermont Auvergne. Pierce signed for Pau, then in Pro D2, ahead of the 2013-14 season and earned a new contract following a breakthrough year in 2014-15 that saw him make 15 first team appearances. Injuries hampered his 2015-16 season though he started seven matches including four in the Top 14 and three in European competition.
