Washington Huskies linebacker Psalm Wooching is switching his focus to rugby. Projected as a late-round NFL draft pick or free agent signing, the 23-year-old has opted to turn down a chance at a professional football career in favor of a shot at the Olympics. Born in Hawaii with Samoan heritage, Wooching said in a statement on social media that his first love was rugby.
“Football has given me so much, it has paved the way for me to accomplish so many things in my life which not all island boys get the chance to do. I have always had a dream to play D1 football while representing my family and my island home with the utmost respect and honor.
“I’ve been in deep thought and prayer about whether I wanted to continue to play football and I’ve come to a conclusion that it is time to turn the page in my life. I will be exchanging shoulder pads for short shorts and rugby boots. My first love and sport that I’ve excelled in was rugby and it is time for me to follow my heart.
“My goal is to be able to represent my country while playing rugby and then on to playing in the next Olympics. This has been a dream of mine for quite some time and I will do anything to accomplish it. In doing so, I hope to have all of your support because my support system – my fans and family – have gotten me to where I am.
“I want to thank everyone that has been with me during my time at the University of Washington. It was the experience of a lifetime and I’ve learned many things on my journey. I am so excited to start this new journey with all of you and the Lord leading the way.”
Wooching already has considerable experience in rugby. He was a High School All-American while playing for Kealakehe and has also turned out for the club rugby side at Washington. An explosive athlete with good size at 6’4″ (1.93m) and 230lbs (105kg), he has been used as an outside center or wing in the 15-a-side game but could be successful in multiple positions in sevens. He has recently joined up with the Seattle Saracens, where he will have access to high level coaching and a number of established US Eagles players to help with his development.
