The USA had home advantage against Uruguay in round one of the 2017 Americas Rugby Championship. Having lost the corresponding fixture in 2016 the Eagles were out for revenge on Los Teros.
Played in San Antonio Texas this past weekend the Eagles and Teros both held the lead at differing times. The fixture was testament to the Americas Rugby Championship as a competition for the future.
At a time in which Georgia has been blocked from competing whatsoever in the Six Nations, the USA’s match against Uruguay is a reminder of the values of rugby. The possibility of expansion in the Americas is also very much alive. Plans exist for a second division to get underway – giving Paraguay, Colombia, Mexico and others a path which Georgia, Romania and others are denied in Europe.
Both Uruguay and the USA are Rugby World Cup 2015 competitors. Their path to Rugby World Cup 2019is underway. Both countries are to compete in qualifying matches mid-year. Depending on results in North and South America there could be another USA vs Uruguay match in 2017. Based on this past weekend’s game it would likely be a quality match.
