USA, Argentina into Sydney Cup Quarter Finals

The USA and Argentina have emerged from the Americas-filled Pool D at the Sydney 7s to qualify for the Cup Quarter Finals on Day Two. Their method was far from convincing, with each side encountering difficulties on Day One.

Argentina dropped their opener against the USA by three points and then defeated Russia, but a nervous draw against Canada in their final match of the day meant that they just squeaked through on points differential. Canada can look to a poor second half against the USA that saw them concede 17 points in four minutes in what ultimately cost them a spot in the top eight. After their two opening wins the Eagles themselves were left disappointed after losing 17-14 to Russia, a late try from Vladislav Lazarenko spoiling their unbeaten start.

Elsewhere England dealt top dogs South Africa a blow with a 21-15 upset win in the last match of Pool A, and Wales stunned Fiji with a 28-15 win in a chaotic game that was the highlight of Pool B. New Zealand topped Pool C to join England as the only teams with a perfect record from Day One.

Los Pumas will have to deal with England in their Quarter Final pairing, while the USA must test their mettle against South Africa. Canada will start their run in the consolation Trophy draw against lowly Japan who struggled on Day One losing all three matches.

All matches on Day Two will be streamed live by World Rugby.
