Both the USA and Canada have qualified for the Cup Quarter Finals of the Sydney 7s. Both teams managed two wins from three during the pool stages on Day One. Brazil were not so lucky, losing all three matches and falling into the consolation Trophy bracket for Day Two.
It was a tough start for the Women’s Eagles, who came up across a determined Russian side who would go on to sweep the pool, dominating England by 31-5 on their way. The USA also defeated England, finding their rhythm in the second half to win four tries to two. Finally they put away Spain to book their place in the Quarter Finals opposite Ireland.
Canada looked in good form as they coasted past France and Papua New Guinea to open their accounts in good order. New Zealand, however, were in no mood to mess about after stuttering past France and they blitzed the Canadians by five tries to two. Canada will not be pleased with how they ended the day and will need to regroup for their date with the in-form Russians in the knock-out rounds.
Defense remains an issue for Brazil, who leaked 14 tries on their way to consecutive defeats against Australia, Fiji, and Ireland. Things were more positive with ball in hand, with four tries scored but winning and maintaining possession proved difficult on Day One. They will take on Spain in the Trophy Semi Final in their first match on Day Two.
Hosts and defending Olympic champions Australia was one of three teams, along with Russia and New Zealand, to come through the pool round unscathed. They will rematch Fiji, who gave them their toughest challenge, in the Cup Quarter Final, while similarly New Zealand will have their second meeting with the unpredictable France.
All matches on Day Two will be streamed live by World Rugby.
