Changes Announced in Uruguay

Changes have been announced in Uruguay, reports Ignacio Chans. Alterations from the Unión de Rugby del Uruguay (URU) concern the format and fixtures of the Campeonato Uruguayo (Uruguayan Championship), which is to get underway on March 11. It is to immediately follow the final round of the Americas Rugby Championship.

Among the changes will be the first division. Eleven clubs will continue playing (Old Christians, Old Boys, Carrasco Polo, Trébol, MVCC, Los Cuervos, Champagnat, PSG, Lobos, Ceibos and Seminario), in round-robin format. It will be followed by the dividing between a qualifying and championship division which are to feature six clubs each.

Unlike previously it will be limited to one rather than two rounds and is to be followed by play-off’s which have also been changed. Qualifying for the play-off’s will be the teams who finish 1-8. In 2016 it was only the top four who competed in the play-off’s.

The Quarter Finals stage will see 1st playing 8th, 2nd vs 7th, 3rd vs 6th and 4th vs 5th. These matches are to be played over two rounds with both sides have the opportunity to play at home. The final, though, will remain at the Estadio Charrúa.

As was the case in 2016 the top four sides will qualify for the Campeonato Argentino. The best two of these will play in the Nacional de Clubes B while the remaining two will compete in the Torneo del Interior B.
