Chile’s 36 Players for Americas Rugby Championship

Chile’s 36 players are known for there first stage of the Americas Rugby Championship. Head Coach Bernard Charreyre has reduced the roster from 50 to 36 players for Los Condores’ away matches against Brazil and Canada. Following this weekend’s camp the roster will be further reduced with the official travel party named.

Chile face Brazil in São Paulo to open the second annual Americas Rugby Championship. The fixture will be played at Pacaembu Stadium on Friday February 03. From there Los Cóndores will travel to British Columbia province to face Canada on the following weekend.

Of the 36 players two are uncapped. Viña Rugby winger Franco Velarde and Curupaytí prop Gonzalo Martínez. Based in Buenos Aires, the Curupaytí club produced Mario Ledesma. Martínez joined the club from Sporting in Santiago.

One name not included is that of Sebastian Kalm. The Ohio Aviators No 8 is reportedly to play for the USA starting from July. The former Chilean u20 player went on to play rugby at college in the USA and became an All-American. Now a professional in PRO Rugby he may debut against Canada in Rugby World Cup qualifying this year.

Also missing for the time being are European-based players. Question marks remain as to their involvement this year. Bayonne prop Ramón Ayarza and second-rower Pablo Huete are the leading names expected to feature for Chile.

Having missed the second test against South Korea Benjamín Soto has returns to captain Los Cóndores. Javier Richard filled-in for him in the second test but is currently missing through injury. Center Matías Nordenflycht returns to the roster. Nordenflycht led the points scoring in the 2016 Americas Rugby Championship.
