OMBAC claim California Cup title

The inaugural California Cup season is in the books, with OMBAC claiming the title in a 26-22 win over Life West at Ray Sheeran Field on Saturday. Tries by US Eagles caps Zach Pangelinan and Tim Stanfill with one from Australian import John Grant did the damage, with eight points coming from the boot of Kalei Konrad and another two from Ian Cassidy. Life West gave a good account of themselves with French flyhalf Guillaume Cazenave scoring 12 points but ultimately came up short to the pre-season favorites from San Diego.

Konrad’s points were enough to see him finish as the competition’s highest scorer on 55, just four ahead of Belmont Shore’s Andy Jackson. An asterisk may be required, however, given that Shore played one less game with their Round 5 match against Olympic rained out. Grant needs no such exceptions with his exceptional tally of nine tries from six games two ahead of teammate Pangelinan.

Third place went to the host side as San Francisco Golden Gate edged Belmont Shore by 20 to 18. A pair of tries to Shore prop Brice Schilling couldn’t quite inspire his team to victory with SFGG’s powerful runners doing the damage. Scores from Opeti Okusi, Lemoto Filikitonga, and Tom Rooke closed Golden Gate’s competition account in style.

The curtain-raiser of the triple-header on Treasure Island saw Olympic claim their first and only win of the competition as they romped to a 50-14 win over a severely depleted Old Aztecs side. Missing key players Jeff Diggs, Mike Deel, Tim Howard, and captain Bill Dow, the Aztecs simply couldn’t compete with the inspired Bay Area side who ran in seven tries to two. Mike Haley led the way with a hat-trick and Keegan Engelbrecht contributed 20 points in all to secure the win.

With PRO Rugby now on indefinite hiatus it remains to be seen how the California clubs will now proceed. Their own Pacific Rugby Premiership had been postponed to accommodate PRO, and the uncertainty now leaves elite level rugby on the west coast without any scheduled competitions. The clubs can celebrate the conclusion of an exciting – albeit condensed – competition but will have to go back to the drawing board to evaluate their next move.
