Landajo breaks leg in Jaguares training

Los Jaguares have suffered a serious blow to their early Super Rugby plans as vice-captain Martín Landajo suffered a broken fibula in a training match on Monday. The star scrumhalf went down just five minutes into a contact scrimmage between the Jaguares players, landing awkwardly under a Leonardo Senatore tackle and immediately doubling over in pain.

Scans have confirmed the broken bone and Landajo is now slated to undergo corrective surgery on Wednesday. While the complete severity of the injury won’t be known until then, typical recovery times from fibula breaks are six-to-eight weeks, which suggests a possible return to action in Round 7 against the Sharks on April 8.

In the meantime the Jaguares will rely on Felipe Ezcurra and Gonzalo Bertranou to get them through the opening rounds of the competition. Alternatives in the event of further injury are very inexperienced. A pair of uncapped 25-year-olds in Marcos Bollini and Juan Manuel Lescano could be considered, while three graduates of last year’s u20 program – Patricio Baronio, Lautaro Bazán, and Mauro Perotti – could also be in consideration. Sebastián Cancelliere is the only scrumhalf currently named in the Argentina XV squad for the Americas Rugby Championship.
