The Lelos are coming to the Americas. The Georgian Rugby Union has today confirmed that their proposed tour to Canada, the USA, and Argentina, will go ahead as planned. As expected the three test dates are June 10, 17, and 24 in what will be the first tour of its kind undertaken by the Eastern European nation. Georgia has traveled to North American shores on two previous occasions, 2009 and 2012, and Argentine once in 2013.
Despite sitting 12th on the official World Rugby rankings the Lelos have struggled against Americas opposition in the past. They have never defeated Argentina in four attempts while their records against Canada and the USA are 2-3 and 1-3 respectively. With rankings points on the line and a strong desire to gain entry in the Six Nations tournament, Georgia will see the tour as must-win and are expected to bring their strongest available side.
The GRU have also confirmed that there is an option to play two ‘A’ matches as well, both in South America. Games against the Argentina XV and Uruguay ‘A’ could see a younger Georgian development squad sent to South America during the second week of their tour.
Times and locations of the North American tests are still to be confirmed. The third test against Argentina will be played at the Estadio 23 de Agosto in Jujuy, kickoff time to be determined.
