Carpenter moves to Doncaster

Aaron Carpenter is no longer a London Welsh player. The Canadian no8 has signed for his third Greene King IPA Championship club in less than a year, joining Doncaster Knights effective immediately. Carpenter will play under the auspices of former Canada defense coach Clive Griffiths and will become the latest Canadian to wear the club’s colors once recovering from a broken arm suffered in November. Tyler Hotson, Jon Phelan, Connor Braid, and the late John Cannon all played for the club in recent years.

London Welsh have been forced into liquidation with their immediate fate to be determined later this month. Half of their senior side have already moved on while the rest are now hanging on in a semi-pro capacity with training only two days a week. The squad has been bolstered by several Aviva Premiership academy players on loan. If the club is allowed to complete their remaining fixtures they still face a relegation battle after an administrative penalty has seen them docked 20 league points.

Doncaster meanwhile lost out to Bristol in last season’s promotion final and are currently in third spot on the table, though they are well behind second-place Yorkshire Carnegie and the undefeated table-toppers London Irish. Carpenter’s signing adds to an impressive roster of loose forwards with veteran bulldozer Latu Maka’afi and one-time Wallabies flanker Beau Robinson already on the books. Also joining the club recently is Tongan World Cup flanker Jack Ram.
