Argentina, Fiji Impress on Day One in Punta del Este

Top seeds Argentina and Fiji impressed on Day One in Punta del Este. The two countries won their respective pools and were the only undefeated sides on the opening day.

Olympic Gold Medalists, Fiji opened with a 33-0 win over Colombia. They went on to down Chile 24-7 and Canada 50-0.  The win over the Canadians was the largest of Day One.

Canada’s loss against Fiji ended what was not a great day for the young side. The selection of a developmental roster saw the North Americans losing all three of their matches. Prior to losing to Fiji the Canada Maple Leafs fell 19-17 to Chile and 19-12 to Colombia. Both results were considered great successes by the South American opponents.

The remaining Group A match saw Colombia and Chile competing for second spot. The teams had a competitive opening half before Los Cóndores 7’s pulled away in the second half. The 28-5 win meant Chile booked a favorable Quarter Final for Day 2.

In Group B the USA Falcons started strongly. Their opening 26-5 win over Uruguay would be their best performance of the night. In their second match a determined Brazil pushed hard but the Falcons ran-out 17-10 winners.

Hopes of a competitive final fixture were blown away quickly as a determined Argentina won 38-0. For Los Pumas 7’s it set up a clear path to the tournament final. Earlier wins by scores of 24-7 and 31-7 over Brazil and Chile had Argentina in strong form before tackling the USA Falcons.

Uruguay’s comfortable 26-7 win over Brazil saw Los Teros 7’s finishing in third spot in the pool. It means the home side will not play Fiji in the Quarter Finals stage on Day 2.
