Panama Complete Historic First Ever Victory, downing El Salvador

History has been made in Guatemala City. Panama has completed an historic first ever victory, downing El Salvador. The match was the Bronze Final of the 2016 South American C Championship.

Having both fallen to Costa Rica and Guatemala today’s match was their one opportunity for a win. El Salvador’s triumph in the 2014 competition seems a distant memory. In this year’s competition Los Torogoces lost 53-22 to Costa Rica and to 53-0 Guatemala.

In 2014 El Salvador defeated Costa Rica 24-14 and Panama 29-3. Today, though, it was Panama who played the superior rugby. The Red Devils ran out 39-19 winners. The result was the biggest in their short history.

With efforts well underway to see Honduras and Nicaragua become future competitors rugby in Central America is stronger than ever before.

Panama entered today’s match on the back of two defeats. Guatemala hammered the Red Devils 72-0 in round one while Costa Rica won 41-10 on Wednesday.

The 2016 South American C Champion is yet to be determined. Guatemala and Costa Rica are to play in the Grand Final. The winner will advance to face Ecuador in repechage in 2017. On the line will be a place in the 2017 South American B Championship.
