Bahía Blanca Lands 2017 Americas Rugby Championship Fixture

Bahía Blanca has landed a 2017 Americas Rugby Championship fixture. Local website La Nueva has confirmed that the Argentina XV will host Uruguay in the city on February 11. The match will take place at Club Villa Mitre.

The city had bid to host test matches in the past. In 2014 it was close to securing Argentina’s home international against Scotland. That match ultimately was allocated to the much larger Córdoba. But now with the creation of the Americas Rugby Championship more cities are set to get a taste of international rugby.

Former Pumas Bernardo Stortoni is from the city. The former Glasgow Warrior played 26 test matches for Argentina and is now the city’s Sub-Secretary of Sports. He commented “the match is set to take place at 7pm. We are evaluating the possibility of setting-up a junior match as we do not want it to be just a single match, but a sporting spectacle for the city”.

The Argentina XV won the inaugural Americas Rugby Championship. The undefeated opening season will be challenged severely in round one as the Argentina XV face Canada in Langford, British Columbia. The following weekend will see the match in Bahía Blanca.
