Canada Women Perfect on Dubai Day One

Canada have emerged one of the early favorites in the race to the Dubai 7s crown as they came through the pool stages undefeated on Day One of the tournament at The Sevens Stadium on Thursday. A late try from skipper Ghislaine Landry was needed to get by the ever-improving Brazil on their first match by a score of only 26-19. Spain would prove a relatively easy match and perhaps most impressively England fell behind 24-5 before a late consolation score made the final gap a more respectable 24-12.

Brazil seemed to have spent much of their energy chasing the Canada upset as they were beaten convincingly by both Spain and England. The USA meanwhile just squeaked past Russia in their opener as they overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit to come away 12-10 winners. Losses to South Africa and Olympic champions Australia rounded out their day.

The Australians looked in fine form as they had little trouble in their opening round, while New Zealand also emerged unscathed with only Fiji offering any significant resistance. The quarter finals begin on Friday at 9am local time, midnight Eastern, with all matches streamed live by World Rugby.
