Video: Spain vs Uruguay 2016

Spain played host to Uruguay on Saturday. The match was the second this month for both countries. Spain was coming off a competitive loss against Tonga while Uruguay was looking to bounce back from a shock defeat at the hands of Germany.

Uruguay named a significantly changed side. It was close to the strongest Los Teros lineup. Missing were Felipe Berchesi, Matías Beer, Gastón Mieres and Joaquín Prada. The side was, otherwise, at full strength.

Their opposition fielded a side comprised of many players qualifying via World Rugby eligibility laws. A number of players are French who meet the requirements via parents or grandparents. Uruguay, in contrast, was entirely home grown.

Spain’s move to lift their level in recent years has achieved a number of victories. In the European Nations Cup Spain is proving to be much more of a force than it had been just three or four years ago. The newfound level saw Los Teros tested. The result of the match saw Spain’s first win over Uruguay since 2011.
