Fiji Seeking to Join Super Rugby

Fiji is seeking to join Super Rugby. In an effort to improve the national team and to fight against the loss of players the Fijian Rugby Union has revealed it wants to go professional.

The Daily Telegraph confirmed on Tuesday that funding of £20 million has already been accounted for to back the proposal. The union also has the support of leading uniform manufacturers to provide additional sponsorship.

It is believed that the new team would be based in Nadi, the location of Fiji’s major airport. The airport has direct flights to a variety of locations in both Australia and New Zealand. Flight times are also far smaller than they are from Australia to Japan or South Africa.

The team would play at a new 20,000 capacity stadium which would be constructed in time to play in the 2018 Super Rugby season.

Both Argentina and Japan joined Super Rugby this year. Prior to that it was exclusively an Australia, New Zealand and South Africa competition. The Fijian team would not be exclusively Fijian. Samoa and Tonga could both have players involved.
