In week two of the November 2016 Internationals Wales hosted Argentina. The match was there 16th in history between the countries and the 6th consecutive time in which the teams have meet in Cardiff. Overall Wales have won eleven matches and Argentina five.
The first capped test between the countries was in 1991. It was a pool match during that year’s World Cup. They would meet again in Cardiff in Rugby World Cup 1999. Wales won both matches in addition to the three in between.
Argentina’s first win over Wales came in 2001. 25 points from Felipe Contepomi led the South Americans to a history-making 30-16 win in Cardiff. Argentina would win three of the next four matches, including a home series win in 2006. That would also be the most recent time in which Wales has played in Argentina.
Argentina’s win over Wales in 2012 marked the debut of Nicolás Sánchez as Argentina’s first choice fly half. On that occasion he scored fourteen points in what was a 26-12 victory. Four years on and a much changed Pumas side was looking to win without European based players. In a hotly-contested match Argentine underlined progress by competing well without their players on big contracts abroad.
