The USA played their second of three November Internationals against Romania on Saturday. Having lost against the Maori All Blacks in game one the Eagles were looking for a win. Their opponents were playing for the first time this month and looking for revenge.
The revenge that the Oaks sought was to overturn their overall record against the Eagles. Prior to Saturday’s match the USA held a 6-1 record. The USA’s dominance included a 34-3 thumping of the Oaks at the same venue in 2012.
As was the case in 2o12 Californian Todd Clever was leading the USA. He was in charge of a significantly different side to that which took to the fields in England in last year’s World Cup. This saw a number of USA 7’s players involved and some curious decisions including the selection of USA based players ahead of Europeans in the starting lineup.
The match itself was significant from the perspective of World Rankings. Romania entered in 16th position, one place ahead of the USA. The result in Bucharest is good news for the Eastern Europeans. The USA now face the task of Tonga in Spain, a tough assignment but with changes it is a match they can do well in.
