In a rematch from Rugby World Cup 2015 Ireland took on Canada in Dublin on Saturday. The game was the eighth ever between the countries. Ireland entered having won seven times. Canada’s best showing having been a 27-27 draw in 2000.
The match was Canada’s first of three November Internationals. For Ireland it was the second of four. Ireland was coming off nothing less than a win in Chicago over New Zealand. The stunning triumph had the Western Europeans re-write history. It also made them overwhelming favorites.
From a Canadian perspective the 2015 and 2008 fixtures were to be used as comparisons. The World Cup match in Cardiff saw Ireland overpowering Canada to win 50-7. Back in 2008 the North Americans were even less competitive, losing 55-0.
For Canada a loss by a margin of lower than 40 points would represent progress. This indeed transpired though the margin would not match that of the games in Vancouver and Toronto in 2009 and 2013. Yet, importantly, on those occasions Canada was up against Irish test sides missing the British & Irish Lions players.
